Dundee Roots Group: Workshop & 2020 ISRR Medal Lecture in Root Research
This one-day event organised by the Dundee Roots Group and held at the West Park Conference Centre in Dundee, is aimed at scientists interested in root research and the plant-soil interface and will feature the 2020 ISRR Medal Lecture on Root Research on "Rhizosphere research - Can we solve the dilemma between detailed knowledge and system understanding?", by Professor Doris Vetterlein, of the UFZ Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Halle, Germany.
Prof Vetterlein is one of the few people working across all disciplines related to rhizosphere for more than two decades. She conducted her PhD under the supervision of Prof Horst Marschner, who was heading a PP related to rhizosphere (Nährstoffdynamik im Kontaktraum Pflanze/Boden) more than 30 years back (1978 - 1988).
During her career (PhD 1993, Habilitation 2006) she moved more and more towards soil science, with topics related to soil chemistry as well as soil physics and modelling, and more recently also soil biology as reflected in her publication record. She was heading a Helmholtz-University Young Investigators Group from 2004 to 2009 on bioavailability of arsenic and thereafter became head of the working group Soil-Plant Interaction involving the position of a senior scientist at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ. In 2013 she was assigned apl. Professor at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.
Prof Vetterlein is very well embedded in the international rhizosphere research community which is reflected in her being asked to review not only a large number of journal articles in the field but likewise to write promotions/assessment for international colleagues, being currently member of two national and international appeal procedures. She is a member of the advisory board of the ERC-Grant of Prof Tiina Roose, jointly with Prof Davey Jones and Prof Philippe Hinsinger. At the national level she is well known within the soil science and the plant nutrition communities being member of DGB and DPG and currently elected member of the DFG Fachkollegium 207 Agrar-, Forstwissenschaften und Tiermedizin.
